Using Subject Matter Experts (SME) in Software Engineering
One thing that you will often hear me say is that Software Engineers are often not good at things outside their field. Most people aren’t. But because we will often work with other fields, we need to be able to utilize a Subject Matter Expert (SME). That is someone who is an expert in the field which we are writing code for. They can help us identify needs, know about potential legal issues, existing solutions (and problems with those solutions) and much, much more.
For work in a school project, where you might not have the money to pay for a SME, you might utilize a an new AI tool like Chat GPT as well as a Search Engine. However, you should note that your results will only be as good as your query/prompt. So make sure you learn how to properly use the tool, and how to verify your answers, as we’ve seen a lot of instances of AI making up answers, especially as it gets more and more technical.
